WHAT IS A GONG BATH ?

Sound as meditation is a time-old proven method to increase awareness, inhibit the stress response and bring about healing. The gong is an ancient and powerful healing instrument which can have profound effects on the mind and body.

Gong baths are extremely relaxing. The sound of the gong is not only heard but absorbed through the body as gentle vibration and reverberation; both calming and soothing.  It cuts through our mental chatter and leads the listener to experience rich feelings of other worldliness, timelessness, expanded awareness and total mind-body harmony.

The gong induces a spontaneous meditative state in the mind by lowering brain wave frequencies. It takes us from Beta, our waking state, to Theta, a dream like state. This is where we can experience deep relaxation and enhanced creativity. The vibrations of the gong also help to heal emotional and physical stresses in our bodies.

The gong effects brain wave frequencies as there is no fixed rhythm to the sound it creates. Gong players play intuitively responding to whatever is present for them in the moment, with no set melodies or recognisable patterns. However the mind seeks to categorise and find logical structure in the sound. When there is none to be found, it surrenders and disengages.  This allows the left, logical side of the brain to rest while the right, creative side of the brain is stimulated.

“In the simplest terms, the gong awakens innate wholeness and guides the body to a state of greater balance and harmony. A gong bath is as scientifically sound as it is mysterious. It is as other-worldly as it is logical. It requires nothing but receptivity in order to be fully experienced, but it must be experienced in order to be understood.”  (Devpreet Kaur, Kundalini Yoga Teacher and sound healer)
